Oddly, On the Media regularly has some terrific Internet thinkers on, including Clay Shirky, who talk at length about how social networks (explicit like Facebook or implicit in discussion forums) shape the nature of what's acceptable and the conversations that take place. Maybe Garfield isn't listening to those pieces, typically interviews that Brooke Gladstone does.

Derek,

I couldn't agree with you more.
As one of the founders of SezWho (one of "the hundreds of comment systems built over the last decade") I can tell you that our goal is to provide distributed reputation - i.e. your reputation carries with you where ever you contribute, and it is context specific - if you develop a good reputation in say politics and then start contributing in say gardening you'll need to "re-earn" your reputation based upon community feedback. Additionally we provide the ability to discover new content based upon people you find interesting. Say you read an interesting comment here, naturally the next question you ask is "who is this person and what else have they contributed?". In addition to their reputation score we also provide links to their other contributions - not only blog comments, but all forms of user generated content - blog posts, forum and wiki contributions, pictures, videos, etc.
Finally, we provide a filtering tool which allows you to filter (collapse/expand) contributions based upon there quality as determined by the community.
OK, end of blatant sales pitch.

Yes, it's odd that Ira would be shocked that people might post crude comments on a site where people opened up their lives, but in fact it does seem like there are lots of trolls around these days who are getting more and more hurtful. Yes, one can protect against them but it's still shocking to see how hateful people can be using the anonymity of the internet.

On the internet no one knows you're a dog.

I hope Sherry Turkle is still doing long term studies on all of this.

Great article, Derek. I also think that different comment systems draw different crowds.

please allow a french-speaker (and, like Magritte, Belgian) to correct : it should be "ceci n'est pas *un* commentaire". Commentaire is a masculine word in french.

The blog medium is fairly fascinating and can be entertaining. "It's all about me" is fairly constant but can be barren if you don't go visit and comment to others. But I suppose it depends on the blog's purpose.
