Well done Derek, on what looks to be a fabulous magazine.
I love this MagCloud idea, & was so excited to get started on my own magazine….. now feeling somewhat flat & deflated upon discovering that MagCloud don’t ship to Australia. They don’t even mention us in their to-do list!
That aside, brilliant work, & I’ll be contacting Cheryl for a copy of Strange Light.

Sean: As I said above, there is no markup on the issue. All of the money is going to the printing and distribution costs.

So, now that you’re selling these for $6/pop, are you going to repay the trust the photographers had in you by throwing them a few bucks? I’m sure its very few — I know just how much of that $6 is actual profit. But I believe they deserve it nonetheless.

This really sounds like an exciting service – if only it were accessible to Europeans (as in: EU member states)! If not the publishing, then at least the purchasing part…

Great job, Derek. And thanks for detailed walk through the process you took. I’ve been doing publications work for a long time now, and services like MagCloud get me excited about the possibilities of print all over again.

By the way, did you have any out-of-pocket costs doing this?

Great story! Thanks for sharing the details of your contact process with photographers – I particularly enjoyed how you made such effort to keep them close to the process.

MagCloud looks like an awesome service, and some friends of mine and I are curious about independent magazine/journal publication. I had previously been thinking of a solely online publication, but MagCloud makes it look incredibly easy! I’ve ordered a copy of Strange Light to check out the quality.
