I know I am a little late to the party, but I thought I aught to get my 2 cents in. I think a customizable home screen is in an update to the iPhone. Removing the Dashboard-like dock and letting people drag customize which application shortcuts go in which spaces. Maybe even allowing multiple pages multiple pages to allow developers to add their applications.

Separating the videos and music is a fantastic idea. Apple should give up the iPod branding and separate videos and music into two applications called Video and Music. iPods can do pictures, but pictures gets its own application and shortcut, how is that consistent with video?

Great article by the way.

Good list. I like the idea of a dedicated "Video" button on the home screen. For that matter, similar to your desire for shuffle, how about a home button for Play All Songs (Shuffle).

My wish list relates mostly to messaging (SMS, MMS, iChat)

1) Configurable System Sounds (SMS tone):
I use my phone as a pager for work. While the iPhone SMS tone is pleasant when you're right next to your phone, it's hardly sufficient when you're in another room or asleep. : P For that matter, it should repeat or allow the user to customize a louder "missed SMS" alert if so desired. *I'm hoping I don't have to hack the file system to change my SMS tone.

2) Can't forward SMS?!
What is this all about?! I love the iChat like SMS interface (speaking of which, see item #3), but I'd wondering why SMS can't be forwarded?

3) iChat??
Sure would be nice to have iChat on the iPhone. In all fairness, I'm guessing ATT may have required Apple not to include iChat because it could ever so slightly cut into SMS revenue. Still, that's a terrible reason not to include a feature. Given the $20 iPhone connectivity, I'm hoping iChat will be added down the road. Also, if the iPhone supported MMS (my wish item #4), the minimal "loss" of SMS revenue could potentially be supplemented by MMS messaging.

4) MMS
Another 'why' wasn't this included? Hopefully, another feature which will be added soon.

All in all, I adore my iPhone. The price is a bit steep, but then Apple elegance has hardly ever been inexpensive. Here's hoping for a long, successful product life and that Apple will listen to consumers in adding features along the way.

Is the iPhone not the lovliest thing ever? My husband laughs at me because I sleep with it now.

I agree that the notes are relatively useless and it would be so sweet to be able to use the songs loaded on the iPod portion as ringtones. The absolute best idea you have is turning the whole screen into the shutter button. That tiny little virtual button is tough to use.

Cool list. Hey, Derek, did you see this app? Mock Dock. Cool way to access iPhone-ready apps.

"And if this thing can set my photos to be wallpapers, why can’t it let me set one of my songs to play for a ringer? "

So AT&T can sell you cheesy midi ringtones?

Reasons 7-10 are the reasons why I'll be waiting at least a revision to actually buy an iPhone. They are so sexy though. I truely want one, but until these "issues" are resolved, I think it'd be a huge annoyance for me. 10 I guess not so much, but copy and paste.. ugh.

- Improve SMS texting. Allow me to send a text to multiple recipients. Allow me to forward an SMS I received.

- Allow attachments when emailing. I found it strange I had to go to the picture for me to email it. I could not attach the picture straight from an email composition.

While I'm talking about forwarding an image, what's up with the image downsizing when I send it out? The original size is 1600 x 1200, but after forwarding the image, it comes out as 640 x 480. I hope this is Apple and AT&T's restrictions.

- Allow MMS. This is probably reiterated all over the net by now, but Apple, almost all phones have this feature. Please include this in your anticipated update.
