plenty of implications for other short run/high cost publications as well...

i'm thinking of k-12 school textbooks
the typical comment from publishers is the market is too small for niche learning projects, so by the time the texbook(s) is/are written they are so bland as to attempt to please the greatest market

..and please no-one..due to the compromises made on the way

magcloud has huge potential in education...and for countries which are connected but small!!..or states with special interests or priorities which do not fit the national curricula - Tasmania!?

I was so excited when I read about this that I leapt up off the giant box of Zeugma back issues I'd been using as a chair and shouted "Hooray!"

Seriously, amazing.

I am assuming that you will provide estimates of production costs or exact costs based on page count and page size? Also, how will the publications be offered, directly through your website through individual sales or subscriptions? I guess marketing the magazines will be a joint effort.

Also, most people are clueless about the requirements of printing such as image resolution, bleed, embedding fonts, etc. Will there be any education or quality control? Will you provide people with pdf settings to avoid trouble? You are basically opening up the magazine publishing world to every Tom, Dick and Harry with a computer and many of them have no design sense or training. I suppose you will just print whatever they send, good or bad.

Thanks

Very intriguing!

You talk about how wonderful paper is - and I agree more than you know.

For this reason, I am so disappointed that you don't talk about the actual paper that the magazines are printed on (though the website does mention weight).

My big question - if not request - is that MagCloud offer two paper grades. A coated and an uncoated. Simple fact is that paper is so ingrained in the design. Some content and subjects demand one or the other. E.G. - Pencil sketches are so out of place printed on coated stock.

Also, are custom sizes available up to a max width and length on the finished size? Or could there be standard format options available? For a project so exciting, a world of 8.5 x 11 can be so boring.

Keep working!

That's so awesome. What a way to save paper and essentially trees! And since the world is becoming so much more dependent on electronics... well this just reaches out to everyone :-)
