Prince Paul and the Automator are freaks - let's just get that out right away. Prince Paul is known as the groove behind De La Soul, and the Automator is the groove behind Dr. Octagon. Together as HBMS, they're one hell of a sonic mishmash - everything from DJ Shadowy ambient grooves to straight up rap. My favorite cuts are "Waterworld", which has some of the weirdest beats I've ever heard (is that dripping water?) and "The Truth" which sounds like what would happen if Portishead was a rap band. All told, this is an amazing cd full great performers (Mike D, DJ Quest, and Grand Puba all make appearances) and a sense of humor (the final track is by just one performer - Father Guido Sarducci). No lie. Check it out. |
